Advertising. Wow lots of blogs talk about it...

Online advertising. What a racket! I've posted here before about the proliferation of ads in websites and how much it's changed over the years. Quick summary: it seems that EVERY website that has an ad these days, has so many of them that it slows down your reading of the actual website content.

Seth Grodin recently wrote about 'The Devil and online advertising' on his blog (that's where I got that link). This is an issue that's quickly coming up to critical mass. Of course, there's also the mindset of folks that are rethinking conventional ads too. Read here about a new thing to put on your business cards. Interesting! Creativity is where it's at.

This course, CSIS 299, is targeted to enable us to make money with websites. There are so many ways to do this, it's a shame for one to build a website that is so stuffed with advertising that it makes you go elsewhere. Who the hell wants popups? Nobody. Who wants or needs animations and Flash characters all over every square inch of a page? Nobody.

Advertising on a website should be subtle. If text links don't do it, then use a GIF image as a link. NEVER put animations in the header, footer, and the sidebars all on the same page. I know that I'm not the only one on the Net these days that feels this way. If there's 100,000 of us then that means there's that many fewer readers your website could possibly have.

Why would you want to turn that many people OFF?
